We all love our stuff

The attachment to our stuff is really significant. This is true also for the NASA scientists who took care of including daily objects in the Curiosity rover.  For example, the penny in the picture below is used on Mars as the calibration target for one camera. Not being an astrophysics I believe there is no  scientific need to use a penny,  it is just a way to symbolize a connection with home, even on Mars. The original story is here.
